Mapping and Phenotype information for this QTL, its variants and associated markers

J:143893

Genetic loci affecting mandible size and shape were mapped using 190 mice from a (C57BL/6JJcl x KK-Ay/TaJcl)F2 intercross. Of the F2 population, 97 animals had the Ay/a genotype and 93 animals had the a/a genotype. Thirteen measurements taken from the right mandible and 3 principal components were assessed in experimental animals 6-7 months of age. Parental strain KK-Ay/TaJcl displays increased values across most of the 13 mandible measurements compared to parental strain C57BL/6JJcl. The Ay allele increases mandible size in KK animals compared to the a allele. A panel of 100 polymorphic markers was used for linkage analysis.

Mssq14 (mandible size and shape QTL 14) mapped to 49.6 cM on mouse Chromosome 15 near D15Mit159. This locus is associated with seven individual mandible measurements and principal component 1 (PC1) in the combined F2 population. Mssq14 is significantly linked to two individual mandible measurements in the a/a F2 group. KK-derived alleles at Mssq14 confer increased mandiblesize measurements and PC1 values for mandible size. Manln17 at 22.2 cM is a previously identified QTL overlapping with Mssq14. Col2a1 (54.5 cM) is a potential candidate gene for Mssq14.
