Linkage analysis was performed on 157 (C57BL/6Hsd x AKR/Hsd)F2 intercross animals to identify QTL associated with hematopoietic parameters. Parental strain C57BL/6Hsd exhibits increased bone marrow cellularity, increased bone marrow progenitors, decreased stem cell frequency in bone marrow, and decreased bone marrow progenitor mobilization compared to parental strain AKR/Hsd. Eighty-seven microsatellite markers were used for the genome scan.

Significant linkage to polymorphonuclear (PMN) cell concentration in blood mapped to 16 cM on mouse Chromosome 12 near D12Mit60 (LRS=16.4). This locus is named Pmncq1 (polymorphonuclear cell concentration QTL 1).

Significant linkage to the number of cobblestone area-forming cells (CAFC) in the femur at day 35 mapped to 27 cM on mouse Chromosome 2 near D2Mit369 (LRS=18.3). This locus is named Cafcnq1 (cobblestone area-forming cell number QTL 1).

Suggestive linkage to colony forming units of granulocyte-macrophage (CFU-GM) in S-phase mapped to 1 cM on mouse Chromosome 11 near D11Mit226 (LRS=13.8). This locus coincides with a previously identified QTL named Pbrgcsf2 at 4 cM involved in peripheral blood stem cell response to granulocyte colony stimulating factor.

Suggestive linkage to PMN percentage in blood mapped to 37 cM - 52.4 cM on mouse Chromosome 7 near D7Mit147 and D7Mit281 (LRS=12.1) and to 56.7 cM on mouse Chromosome 17 near D17Mit123 (LRS=11.4).

Suggestive linkage to percentage of immature PMN in blood mapped to 50.2 cM - 57.4 cM on mouse Chromosome 15near D15Mit241 and D15Mit15 (LRS=10.2).

Suggestive linkage to percentage of PMN in bone marrow mapped to 56.7 cM on mouse Chromosome 17 near D17Mit123 (LRS=15.1).

Suggestive linkage to number of PMN in bone marrow per femur mapped to 82 cM on mouse Chromosome 5 near D5Mit222 (LRS=14.8).

Suggestive linkage to CFU-GM in bone marrow per femur mapped to 109.6 cM on mouse Chromosome 1 near D1Mit511 (LRS=10.3), 16 cM on mouse Chromosome 12 near D12Mit60 (LRS=11.1), and to 10 cM - 26 cM on mouse Chromosome19 near D19Mit95 and D19Mit19 (LRS=13.3).

Suggestive linkage to CAFC on day 35 per 106 BMC mapped to 86.6 cM on mouse Chromosome 1 near D1Mit143 (LRS=13.6).

Suggestive linkage to progenitor cell mobilization (Lin-Sca-1+kit+) mapped to 51 cM on mouse Chromosome 6 near D6Mit150 (LRS=10.4) and to 51 cM - 70 cM on mouse Chromosome 10 near D10Mit95 and D10Mit271 (LRS=14.7).
