This gene was discovered by differences in strain resistance to transplantable tumors. The a and b alleles are found in congenic strains C3H and C3H.K, respectively. At least 6 alleles are known. Antigen is present on many tissues, including transplantable tumors, skin, thymocytes and macrophages.
