Legend to Table 1

aThe strains listed are those inbred strains which entered, either as first or second parent, into the production of the congenic strains shown in Tables 2, 3, 4, and 5. In the case of some of the early strains, especially those in Table 2, the subtrain used is unknown and is therefore not indicated. Where more than one substrain is used, as in the case of C57BL/6, the currently most relevant is shown.

bThe loci listed for each inbred strain are, with the exception of a few linked loci, those at which differences occur between one or more congenics and the inbred strain. Chromosome numbers, where known, are indicated in parentheses. Genes closest to the centromere are given at the left of each group of linked genes. Loci whose relative positions are undetermined are bracketed. The references from which information concerning genotype have been taken are: 34 (information re H-1, H-3, H-13, strain KR), 35 ( H-3), 39 ( Ir-2), 41 ( Tla), 43 ( Pgk-2), 44 (linkage of Fv-2 and H-7), 58 (non-H-2 alleles), 59 (non-H-2 alleles), 60 ( a, c, Hbb, Hc, H-2, p), 62 (strains FS and UW), 63 (does BALB/c have fifth Tla allele?), 64 ( Apl), 65 (Ea difference between B6 and B10).

cThe Pgk-2 allele of strain 129 differs in different sublines. The allele in the subline which we have used appears to have been Pgk-2c.
