N normal phenotype
behavior/neurological
N
• locomotor activity is similar to littermate controls at 30-45 days of age
• normal weight gain and post-weaning food intake during early life (0 to 32 days and 23 to 32 days, respectively), increase food intake with advancing age, starting after 32 days of age
• food intake almost doubles after 40 days of restricted feeding
• no difference when analyzed over a 4-day interval
• subtle increase in food intake is noticeable when monitored over 50 days (ages 34 to 84 days), with the onset of obesity preceding hyperphagia
• age-dependent in older mice and independent of body weight

growth/size/body
• as a percent of total body mass
• gradually become extremely obese starting after 32 days of age, with onset of obesity preceding hyperphagia
• mice gain more weight even when food intake is restricted to match littermate controls
• increase weight gain in mutant mice unless food intake is restricted to 10% (females) and 13% (males) less than that of littermate controls

adipose tissue
• enlarged brown adipose tissue depots
• increase in visceral adiposity
• greater than twice the size of cells in controls

liver/biliary system
• normal while on a regular chow diet but much greater hepatic steatosis on a high-fat diet

homeostasis/metabolism
N
• fasting insulin, glucose tolerance, corticosterone levels, thyroid hormone levels, energy expenditure, respiratory quotient, and body temperature are similar to controls in adult obese mice
• in adult obese mice
• significantly reduced
• significantly reduced

digestive/alimentary system
• no difference in calories absorption
