Table 8-2. Phenotypic Characteristics of the Mo-Locus Series of Alleles

Allele  Male Homozygote  Female Heterozygote

Mottled (Mo)  Lethal in utero at ~ 11 days gestation  Irregularly mottled or brindled coat, curly whiskers; reduced-viability; survivors usually fertile
Dappled-2a  Lethal in utero at 11 - 12 days gestation (blood vessel aneurysms?)  Phenotypes similar to Mo; curly vibrissae; coat maybe slightly wavy and of fine texture; incoordination of hind limbs in some; calcified lumps in muscles, tendons, or attached to vertebrase or bones of feet; reduced viability and fertile
Brindled (Mobr)  Dirty white to light grey in color; curly whiskers; abnormal hairs and coat wavy; neurological disturbance; usually die at ~ 14 days postpartum but a few have lived and been fertile  Phenotypes similar to Mo; curly whiskers; some hairs abnormal but not as structurally altered as in males; slight riplling of the coat; viable and fertile
Viable-brindled (Movbr)  Light-colored fur; curly whiskers; neurological disturbance; reduced viability (many succumb to blood vessel rupture), and sterile  Like Mobr
Dappled (Modp)a  Lethal at ~ 17 days gestation but some survive to about time of birth; skeletal defects  Phenotypes similar to Mo; curly whiskers; some hairs abnormal and similar to those in Mobr/+ females; some have clubbing of fore feet at birth; calcerous deposits (especially on vertebral column); low incidence of aortic lesions; viable and fertile
Blotchy (Moblo)  Light-colored fur (somewhat resembling cch/c); usually of small size, occasionally have deformed hind legs; vibrissae kinky at birth but straighten; high incidence aortic aneurysm and osteoarthrosis; reduced viability (many succumb to blood vessel rupture) and many infertile  Irregularly mottled or brindled coat; curly whiskers; significant incidence of aortic aneurysm; viable and fertile
Tortoiseshell (To)  Lethal in utero; often with macroscopic aortic lesions  Phenotypes similar to Mo; whiskers slightly curled; silky testured coat; some display skeletal abnormalities in fore and hind limbs; viable and fertile but many die of aortic aneurysm rupture

aThis mutation was described by Lyon ( 1960) and was provisionally named dappled-2. However, since it was not judged to be clearly distinguishable from mottled, Mo, this name was withdrawn.
