Abstract:

Full text of MNL contribution: Change of Symbol. Two publications specifically on slate have been published (Pierro and Chase, 1963 Slate-A new coat color mutant in the mouse. J. Hered. 54:47-51; and Pierro and Chase, 1965 Temporary hair loss associated with the slate mutation of coat color in the mouse. Nature 205:579-580.) However, this mutant of ours has recently been tested by Mary Lyon and found to be allelic with beige, possibly even identical but not determined yet. Since beige was reported first in MNL in 1957 and reported in 1958 (MNL 19: 38) to be linked with satin by Liane B. Russell, she requests that the locus retain the name beige (bg). Unless slate is proved to be an additional allele at this locus, bg-slt, the term slate should be dropped, and Dr. L.B. Russell will be the source of the type mutant at this locus. (H.B. Chase)
