Abstract:

Full text of MNL contribution: Research news: 3. Roan and Freckled. The genes roan, Rn, and freckled, Fkl, (both on chr. 14) show considerable phenotypic similarities and the question of their allelism has been considered (MNL 44: 30; MNL 48: 31). The early linkage data on Fkl (MNL 42: 27; MNL 44: 30) placed Fkl more distally on chr. 14 than Rn (s-Rn, 7.4; s-Fkl, 17.7). However, in breeding from Rh+/+Fkl double heterozygotes no definite crossovers were obtained (MNL 48:31). Further linkage data now give a somewhat different position for Fkl. From crosses of hr s +/++ Fkl female x hr s +/hr s + male the offspring were: ++Fkl, 174; +s Fkl, 1; hr + Fkl, 34; hr s Fkl, 10; +++, 11; + s +, 33; hr ++, 2; hr s +, 154; total, 419. This gives hr-s, 70/419 or 16.7 +/- 1.8%; s-Fkl, 22/419 or 5.7 +/- 1.1%; hr-Fkl, 88/419 or 21.0 +/- 2.0%. Thus these data give a location of Fkl close to that originally found for Rn. The reason for the difference from the earlier data is not known; possibly a change in genetic background was relevant. It seems clear that Rn and Fkl should be shown close to each other on the genetic map of chr. 14 and are either allelic or part of a gene cluster. (Lyon and Glenister)
