Abstract:

Full text of MNL contribution: 4. Dusty (sldu). A new recessive at the steel locus occurred in 1962 in the C3H/HeJ strain. Homozygotes have slightly diluted coat color and small white patches that vary in number from none to extensive white speckling, and they are not noticeably anemic. They are sometimes recognizable only by whitish toes and light color on the ventral side of the lower jaw. Sl/sldu mice have a moderate anemia at birth, producing a recognizable paleness, and usually have more white spotting than Sl/+ mice. Matings of Sl/sldu by s1du/sldu produced 6 apparently wild type offspring out of a total of 334, but the four of these that survived for testing all proved to be sldu/sldu. (M.C. Green and H.O. Sweet).
