Abstract:

Full text of MNL contribution: M.M. Dickie. New mutations: An agouti type animal called intermediate agouti, symbol Ai, arose in the C57BL/6J strain in October, 1960. This animal was agouti on the flanks and ventrum and very dark on the dorsum. Matings with the deviant female and normal sibs produoed 99 offspring, 51 like the deviant and. 48 normal non-agouti. Matings of the deviant type inter se have produced 311 offspring, 66 resembling Aw, 166 like the original deviant, and 79 normal non-agouti. Outcrosses were made to C3H/Di with both phenotypes from deviant inter se matings. When animals resembling Aw, presumed to be AiAi, were crossed with AA (C3H/Di), 83 offspring were produced and all resembled Aw. When the original type deviant, Aia, was crossed with AA, 74 offspring were produced, 37 resembling Aw and 37 indistinguishable from AA. Matings of Aia x AiAi have produced 202 offspring, 113 AiAi and 89 Aia. The homozygous mutant AiAi resembles Aw-. The heterozygote AiA is indistinguishable from the homozygote AiAi or from Aw. The heterozygote Aia is intermediate in color between Aw and aa. A neuromuscular deviant called heeler, symbol he, arose in the AKR/J strain in August, 1960. The behavior of this deviant resembles reeler. Unlike reeler, most of these deviants survive and can breed.
