Glossary Term Targeted Mutation
Definition A type of mutation in which a chromosomal gene is altered by the substitution of a DNA construct assembled in vitro. In mouse, the constructs are usually designed to eliminate gene function; such targeted mutations are often casually referred to as knock outs. Some DNA constructs are designed to alter gene function; such targeted mutations are often casually referred to as knock ins.
