Mice homozygous for an insertion of a tetracycline-regulated gene switch display no overt phenotype when expression is abolished by doxycycline treatment; in contrast, untreated homozygotes show abnormal respiratory responses to hypoxia, impaired parturition, and pregnancy-related premature death.
