Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit decreased muscle cell glucose uptake. Mice homozygous for a different knock-out allele exhibit anemia, reticulocytosis, splenomegaly, increased erythrocyte turnover, and elevated plasma erythropoietin levels.
