Mice for a gene-trapped null allele are obese and develop liver steatosis and/or hepatic inflammation resembling nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Some mice develop liver tumors. Mice homozygous for another knock-out allele exhibit normal HMGCR turnover in mouse embryonic fibroblasts.
