Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele are viable and overtly normal but show a mild alteration of de novo translation in heart and liver mitochondria. Mitochondrial transcripts that undergo non-canonical RNA processing accumulate 3' phosphates, preventing their polyadenylation, causing a respiratory chain deficiency.
