Linkage analysis was performed on 5 different populations of backcross animals using 243 polymorphic markers spanning 19 autosomes to identify QTLs associated with atopic dermatitis. The NOA strain develops ulcerative skin lesions and was crossed separately to each of the parental strains C57BL/6J, IQI, C3H/HeJ, DBA/2J, and BALB/cByJ. Backrosses were generated from these F1 animals. 559 backcross animals were examined and used for genotyping.

A significant locus (P<0.001) was detected on central mouse Chromosome 14 spanning a 17.5 cM interval and is designated Derms (dermatitis susceptibility). The Derms locus is flanked by markers D14Mit236 (32.5 cM) and D14Mit160 (40 cM).
