67 polymorphic markers at an average spacing of 24 cM were typed in 220 (BALB/c x MSM)F1 x MSM backcross animals to identify QTLs involved in susceptibility to gamma-irradiation induced thymic lymphomas. Parental strain BALB/c is susceptible to gamma-irradiation induced thymic lymphomas whereas parental strain MSM is resistant. (BALB/c x MSM)F1 hybrid animals are susceptible to gamma-irradiation induced thymic lymphomas. Thyls (thymic lymphoma susceptibility) was identified on mouse chromosome 4 near D4Mit12 (P = 0.0037) in the backcross and confirmed using partially congenic animals carrying MSM-derived DNA in the region of D4Mit12 on a BALB/c background. BALB/c-derived alleles confer dominantly inherited susceptibility to gamma-irradiation induced thymiclymphomas at Thyls. Possible candidate genes in the region of Thyls are Il14, Ifna, and Tyrp1. Suggestive linkages for gamma-irradiation induced thymic lymphoma susceptibility were detected on mouse Chromosome 2 near D2Mit15 and mouse Chromosome 5 near D5Mit5.
