    The authors were able to establish tight linkage between pitx3 and the ak mutation. Expression analysis revealed a decrease in the Pitx3 transcript in ak mice. Subsequent sequence analysis revealed the presence of two deletions in the Pitx3 gene in ak mice that remove the putative promoter region, exon 1 and intron 1 and a region 2.5kb upstream of the putative transcription site. The order of genes around the Pitx3 locus was determined to be: 5' - Gbf1 - 3' - 2.5kb - 5' - Pitx3 - 3' - 3' - Elovl3 - 5'.
