C57BL/6J mice and C57BL/6ByJ mice show a significant difference in response to a cholesterol enriched atherogenic diet. C57BL/6J mice showed low levels of total LDL/VLDL (low density lipoproteins/ very low density lipoproteins) whereas C57BL/6ByJ mice show high levels. F1 mice derived from a cross between these two strains indicated that the difference in response was the result of a single recessive gene in C57BL/6ByJ, which the authors called Diet1. A/J mice and C57BL/6J mice show a similar response toa atherogenic diet allowing for a genome wide scan for Diet1 in 400 (C57BL/6ByJ x A/J)F1 x C57BL/6ByJ backcross mice. Diet1 had the highest score near D2Mit117 (LOD 9.6) flanked by markers D2Mit355 and D2Mit60.
