Caption Col5a1tm1Rjw/Col5a1tm1Rjw (col5a1-/-, A) and Col5a1tm1Rjw/Col5a1+ (col5a1+/-, B) embryos are approximately the same size at day 10.5, but more blood is apparent in the heterozygous embryo. In the yolk sacs of day 10.5 embryos, the blood-filled vessels are evident in the heterozygotes (D) but not in the homozygotes (C). Pooled blood is observed in the homozygous yolk sac.
