High magnification fluorescent images of the pharyngeal arch region of E9.5-10.5 DAPI stained (a) wild-type and (b) Kdr^orv/Kdr^orv (orvieto) embryos. Arrowheads illustrate the abnormal size and shape of individual pharyngeal arches in each of the mutants identified in our screen. Embryos exhibit agenesis of the caudal third and fourth pharyngeal arches. They display abnormal maxillomandibular hinge morphology. Overall, the mandibular prominence is reduced in size, particularly at its proximal end. Embryos also show hypoplastic second pharyngeal arch, which also displays a proximal constriction and ventrolateral separation from the face.
