High magnification fluorescent images of the pharyngeal arch region of E9.5-10.5 DAPI stained (a) wild-type and (b) Aldh1a2^grim/Aldh1a2^grim (grimace) embryos. Arrowheads illustrate the abnormal size and shape of individual pharyngeal arches in each of the mutants identified in our screen. The asterisk demarcates the perturbed boundary between the maxillary and mandibular prominences. Embryos show agenesis of the caudal third and fourth pharyngeal arches. The proximal portion of the mandibular prominence protrudes over the medial portion of the arch and there is no clearly defined maxillary prominence.
