Caption Cross-sections of E9.5 placentas from wild-type (WT, A) and Epn1tm1Ocr/Epn1tm1Ocr Epn2tm1Ocr/Epn2tm1Ocr (DKO, B) embryos and cross-section of the yolk sac from a mutant embryo (C). The wild-type placenta is much thicker than the mutant placenta, and only some layers are included in the picture (the decidual and giant cell layers are not displayed). In the wild-type, but not in the mutant placenta, there is intermingling of embryonal (E) and maternal (M) vessels. As a result, the labyrinthine layer is missing in the mutant placenta. The cross-section of a mutant yolk sac reveals the presence of nucleated blood cells in the vascualr sinusoids (arrowheads), thus showing occurrence of hematopoiesis. De, decidua; GC, giant cell layer; SP, spongiotrophoblast layer; La, labyrinthine layer; CP, chorionic plate; AL, allantois.
