Caption Axonal morphology in dorsal and ventral roots of old wild-type, Nefmtm1Ral/Nefmtm1Ral, Nefhtm1Ral/Nefhtm1Ral, and Nefhtm1Ral/Nefhtm1Ral Nefmtm1Ral/Nefmtm1Ral mice. Light microscopy of toluidine blue-stained cross sections of L4 dorsal (A,C,E and G) or L4 ventral (B,D,F and H) roots from 2 year old wild-type (WT, A and B) Nefmtm1Ral/Nefmtm1Ral (NF-M, C and D), Nefhtm1Ral/Nefhtm1Ral (NF-H, E and F), or Nefmtm1Ral/Nefmtm1Ral Nefhtm1Ral/Nefhtm1Ral (NF-M/H, G and H) mice. Insets show cross sections of whole roots at lower magnification. The ventral root axons in the Nefmtm1Ral/Nefmtm1Ral and double homozygous mutants appear shrunken and frequently irregular in shape. In the dorsal roots only axons in the double homozygous mutants are affected by the atrophic process. Bar, 10 um.
