Phenotype Image Detail
Image
Caption A and B represent light microscopic appearance of placenta from E11.5 wild type (A) and Med1tm1Jkr/Med1tm1Jkr (B) embryos. Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of wild type placenta show the labyrinthine (La) part, with prominent fetal vessels containing nucleated fetal erythrocytes, and the less dense basal spongiotrophoblast (Sp). B, in contrast, the mutant placenta reveals less vascular labyrinthine and spongiotrophoblast layers. Vascular channels are scant in the mutant placenta, and contain few erythrocytes. C-E represent electron microscopic appearance of wild-type and mutant placentas. Wild-type placenta (C) shows the three-layered (I,II and III) septa separating fetal sinuses, containing nucleated erythrocytes (Nu), from maternal sinuses, containing non-nucleated erythrocytes (Er). Numerous lipid droplets are seen in layer III in wild type placenta. En, endothelial cell. D: The distinct separation between fetal and maternal sinuses is not obvious in the mutant placenta, as it contains densely packed trophoblast cells. E: Erythrophagocytic activity of trophoblast cells (arrows) in mutant placenta.
