Condylar longitudinal serial sections. Following photography, gene expression patterns were given computer-generated artificial colors and viewed alone or superimposed. Vertical back lines in A,E,I,M,Q and U indicate the apical condylar portion expressing Sox9 only that overlays condylar cartilage expressing collagen II and moderate Sox9 levels. dp, disc progenitor layer; f/p, fibroblastic/polymorphic layer. Scale bars = 100 microns in A-C,E-G,I-K,M-O,Q-S,U-W, 50 microns in D,H,L,P,T,X.
