reproductive system
• most sperm show abnormal morphology like tail bending, decollation and head deformities
• sperm show tail bending
• most sperm show head deformities
• however, the acrosome is present and sperm chromatin integrity is normal
• at 10 to 12-weeks of age, mature spermatids in cauda epididymides are markedly decreased, and cauda epididymides are full of round spermatids with abnormally shaped nuclei shedding from the seminiferous tubules
• elongating spermatids show abnormal manchette morphology
• after step 10 of spermiogenesis, the microtubules of manchette are unable to move caudally down the nucleus and the perinuclear ring of the manchette fails to constrict; as a result, the portion of the nucleus next to the connecting piece is wider than in wild-type controls, causing a hammer-head sperm shape
• perinuclear ring fails to constrict as the manchette moves toward the spermatid tail
• at 10 to 12-weeks of age, the proportion of elongated spermatids is lower than that in wild-type testes, with only a few mature spermatids found in the cauda epididymides
• at 10 to 12-weeks of age, the total count of cauda epididymides sperm is dramatically decreased
• at 10 to 12-weeks of age, the percentages of motile and progressive sperm are dramatically decreased
• at 10 to 12-weeks of age, post-meiotic development of elongating spermatids in stage VII seminiferous tubules is disrupted
• male homozygotes are sterile due to severe oligoasthenoteratozoospermia
• mating behavior is normal
