endocrine/exocrine glands
• increase in follicular cellularity with irregular or colloid-deficient follicles
• increase in follicular cellularity with irregular or colloid-deficient follicles
• hyperplasia is evident at 3 months of age, but onset can be seen as late as 10 months of age
• hyperplastic thyroids show cellular invaginations into the follicle resembling micro-papillary structures of differentiated thyroid carcinoma
• 23% of mice younger than 7 months of age show thyroid carcinoma while 78% of mice older than 7 months of age develop thyroid carcinoma
• thyroid carcinoma is characterized by the proliferation of follicular epithelial cells containing scant cytoplasm, absent mitotic figures and papillae containing fibrovascular stalks, characteristic of differentiated carcinoma
• tumor metastases to local cervical lymph nodes, peripheral lymph nodes, or lungs are not seen as neither is inflammation
