immune system
• 30.8% of 10-18 month old mice devlop otitis media, associated with mucopurulent material completely or partially filling the middle ear lumen
• otitis is generally unilateral
• increase in polymorphonuclear neutrophil recruitment to the middle ear lumen, accompanied by greater numbers of macrophages and increased cell debris
• mice show signs of chronic otitis media indicated by frequent remodeling of the middle ear epithelium characterized by epithelial hyperplasia, polyps, and thickening of the middle ear mucosa
• source of inflammation in the middle ear is unclear as middle ears are negative for bacterial and fungal pathogens
• however, Eustachian tubes appear normal
• in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of mice challenged with K. pneumonia
• in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of mice challenged with K. pneumonia
• in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of mice challenged with K. pneumonia
• severe in mice challenged with K. pneumonia
• mice exhibit increased susceptibility to K. pneumonia with higher bacterial colony forming units in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lungs, increased neutrophil infiltration, increased cytokine (TNFalpha, IL1A, IL1B) and chemokine production and severe pneumonia compared with wild-type mice

respiratory system
N
• mice exhibit normal susceptibility to spontaneous development of lung disease or infection and normal lung structure
• severe in mice challenged with K. pneumonia
