• following exposure to mechanical stimuli, mice exhibit decreased mean firing rates compared with wild-type mice
• however, mechanical threshold and peak instantaneous frequency are normal
• mice exhibit decreased cold and heat sensitivity compared with wild-type mice
• mice exhibit a lower cold threshold and a higher heat threshold compared with wild-type mice
• peak instant frequency is decreased under heat conditions compared to in wild-type mice
• in mice subjected to a heat ramp, average firing rate of neurons is decreased compared to in wild-type mice

nervous system
• in mice subjected to a heat ramp, average firing rate of neurons is decreased compared to in wild-type mice
• patch clamp studies reveal a higher rheobase than in wild-type neurons
• beta-alanine has no effect on firing rate unlike in wild-type neurons
