• loss of periorbital hair at approximately 14 days of age followed by complete loss of hair by 3 weeks of age
• absent dermal papilla
• massively dilated follicular infundibulum with laminated cornified material
• at the end of the first catagen phase the dermal papilla fails to follow the contracting follicle and becomes stranded deep in the reticular dermis and results in the formation of utricles and deep dermal cysts
• skin folding
• small, deep dermal cysts
