• despite disruptions in embryonic erythropoiesis, adult hematopoiesis is normal in irradiated mice reconstituted with Socs3tm1Jni cells
• embryos exhibit a shift from more immature populations to more mature, non-proliferative populations of erythroid cells
• in a colony-forming assay, the number of erythroid colony-forming cells, burst-forming cells and IL-3 sensitive multilineage progenitors is decreased 10-fold compared to wild-type while colony size is typically 5 to 10 times larger than colonies from wild type mice
• at E12.5, mice exhibit erythrocytosis that increases in frequency with age
• most erythrocytes are still nucleated unlike in wild-type mice
