• breed well and appear healthy, are of normal size, and do not have increased susceptibility to infection
• no marked abnormalities in the major T or B cell compartments and are capable of mounting T and B cell responses to complex antigens
• variable, diversity and joining segment so lymphocyte receptor genes from adult mutant mice have few template-independent nucleotides showing extensive evidence of homology-directed recombination
