N normal phenotype
behavior/neurological
• null mice exhibit longer latencies to escape foot shock and a higher rate of escape failures
• null mice display a longer latency to begin feeding in a novel environment compared to wild-type; female mice exhibited longer latencies compared to males, irrespective of genotype
• in a forced swim test paradigm, null mice display significant increases in immobility compared to wild-type
• in the elevated plus maze test, null mice display less total arm entries and had fewer head dips compared to wild-type littermates; indicating an increased level of indecision

nervous system
• null mice have significantly fewer 5HT-positive neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus than wild-type mice
• average firing rate of serotonergic neurons in null mice is reduced ~4-fold compared to wild-type
