mortality/aging
• homozygotes are not found at birth but are present at E9.5

embryo
• neural crest cells show impaired delamination and migration
• at E10.5 neural crest cells remain compacted at the base of the branchial arches
• in neural tube explants most mutant neural crest cells migrate at most 10 um compared to wild-type neural crest cells that migrate 80-100 um
• neural crest cells show impaired delamination
• seen at E10.5; however, size is similar at E9.5
• cranial mesenchyme is absent
• neural plate formation is normal but development is impaired
• at E10.5 the neural tube is jagged and severely distorted
• the neuroectoderm remains very thin compared to wild-type littermates
• at E10.5 failure of neural tube closure is seen along the whole body axis (J:96452)
• the somites are misaligned and staggered in a zipper-like fashion
• the boundaries between somites are not well defined

growth/size/body
• seen at E10.5; however, size is similar at E9.5
• cranial mesenchyme is absent

vision/eye
• at E10.5 only rudimentary eye anlagen is seen

nervous system
• neural plate formation is normal but development is impaired
• at E10.5 the neural tube is jagged and severely distorted
• the neuroectoderm remains very thin compared to wild-type littermates
• at E10.5 failure of neural tube closure is seen along the whole body axis (J:96452)
• neuroectoderm proliferation is decreased and mitotically active cells are found clustered suggesting a scattering defect after cell division

cardiovascular system
