• Background Sensitivity: although the induction of slow-wave sleep in response to influenza is normal but slightly shorter in duration compared with C57BL/6 mice, infection with Newcastle disease virus fails to induce increased slow-wave sleep in this congenic, similar to the non-responsive phenotype found in BALB/c mice

• Relative to C57BL/6 mice, BALB/c respond to the Kumarov strain of Newcastle disease virus with much lower serum interferon titers and F1 hybrids respond with intermediate titers closer to that of the BALB/c parent than to that of the C57BL/6 parent

• Background Sensitivity: in response to Newcastle disease virus or i.p. injection with polyinosinic: polycytidilic acid, which increases plasma interferon activity and increases slow-wave sleep and decreases locomotor activity in C57BL/6 mice, BALB/c mice do not show increased slow-wave sleep or decreased locomotor activity, nor do they have increased slow-wave sleep in response to intranasal inoculation with influenza virus, which causes increased slow-wave sleep in C57BL/6 mice.
