• 95% of mice die between 24 and 48 hours with remaining mice dying at 3 weeks of age

• at P1, mice exhibit arrested development of the terminal air sacs with mesenchymal thickening unlike in wild-type mice
• however, lung development at E15.5 to E18.5 is normal
• smooth muscle alpha-actin staining indicates defects in pulmonary mesenchymal differentiation compared to in wild-type mice

• peripheral T cells fail to proliferate in response to anti-CD3 and anti-CD28 or anti-CD3 and IL2 unlike similarly treated wild-type cells
• in a Rag2 null reconstitution experiment, B220+ cells are increased compared to in mice reconstituted with wild-type E14.5 fetal liver cells
