• aggregates of mast cells are found in the intestinal mucosa
• rectal prolapse occurs in 5 of 8 mice during the first year of life
• low dose DSS (1.5%) leads to inflammatory bowel disease with 20% weight loss, bloody stools, and an inflamed intestinal mucosa
