hematopoietic system
• about 30% of young mice contain red blood cells that are basophilic, larger in size, and have a "target cell" like appearance reflecting a decrease in the cytoplasm to cell surface ratio; referred to as basophilic macrocytes
• the percentage of basophilic macrocytes increases with age
• in severe cases up to 60% of red blood cells are basophilic macrocytes
• in mice at about 1 year of age but not at 3 months of age
• red blood cell numbers are lower in mice with basophilic macrocytes compared to wild type mice and homozygous mutants without basophilic macrocytes
• in mice at about 1 year of age but not at 3 months of age
• hematocrit is lower in mice with basophilic macrocytes compared to wild type mice and homozygous mutants without basophilic macrocytes
• about 30% of young mice contain red blood cells that have a "target cell" like appearance reflecting a decrease in the cytoplasm to cell surface ratio
• about 30% of young mice contain erythocytes that are larger than normal
• most mice with severe anemia also have mild to moderate thrombocytopenia
• most mice with severe anemia also have mild to moderate monocytosis
• reticulocyte counts in anemic mice range between 5% and 60%
• some spleens show signs of infarctions
• seen in mice with high percentages of basophilic macrocytes and anemia
• in some cases the spleen weighs more than 5 g
• in spleens of anemic mice T and B lymphocytes are replaced with intensely basophilic and sometimes dysplastic erythroblasts and proerythroblasts

neoplasm
• in 2 mice with extramedullary hematopoiesis in the liver, pedunculated liver tumors were seen

immune system
• most mice with severe anemia also have mild to moderate monocytosis
• some spleens show signs of infarctions
• seen in mice with high percentages of basophilic macrocytes and anemia
• in some cases the spleen weighs more than 5 g
• in spleens of anemic mice T and B lymphocytes are replaced with intensely basophilic and sometimes dysplastic erythroblasts and proerythroblasts

growth/size/body
• seen in mice with high percentages of basophilic macrocytes and anemia
• in some cases the spleen weighs more than 5 g

liver/biliary system
• in 2 mice with extramedullary hematopoiesis in the liver, pedunculated liver tumors were seen
