• despite a reduction in erythroid progenitors, mice exhibit normal numbers of granulocyte-macrophage and pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells
• mice exhibit fewer nucleated cells in the fetal livers and a decrease in the number or erythropoietic foci compared to in wild-type mice
• at E15.5, mice exhibit severe fetal anemia
• at E13.5, the number of Ter-119+ erythroid precursors in the fetal liver is decreased compared to in wild-type mice due to apoptosis
• at E13.5, fetal liver cells produce 40% fewer erythroid colony-forming unit compared to wild-type cells
• however, the number of erythroid burst-forming unit are normal and supplementing medium with erythropoietin prevents the apoptosis of erythrocyte progenitor cells
• at E15.5, mice exhibit 75% fewer erythrocytes compared to in wild-type or heterozygous mice
