• 20% of mutant sperm exhibit combined head and tail defects
• in step 8-9 spermatids developing manchettes have abnormal and ectopic microtubule formations
• however, the few cross-bridges between microtubules are similar to wild-type in size
• homozygous males produce almost no offspring
