Meiotic arrest and apoptosis of spermatocytes in Sycp2tm1Jw/Sycp2tm1Jw mice

reproductive system
• increased apoptosis of spermatocytes
• no postmeiotic germ cells
• epididymal tubules are empty at 8 weeks of age
• homologous chromosome alignments but full synapsis is interrupted
• complete meiotic arrest
• spermatocytes develop to zygotene stage but fail to continue to pachytene
• failure of chromosome synapsis, axial elements fail to form
• spermatocytes undergo apoptosis
• significantly smaller in diameter
• testis weight 70% less than controls
• average litter size for females of 4.4 pups as opposed to 7.8 pups in controls
