• a decrease in alveolar development in pregnant mice was observed at days 12.5-17 dpc, with the alveoli remaining condensed, suggesting a lactation defect
• at parturition, alveoli appreared distended compared to controls and the luminal epithelial cells appeared flat in shape compared to the cuboidal shape in controls, although secretory activity was apparent
• by 6 days postpartum, mammary gland morphology appeared similar to controls, indicating that the impairment of alveolar development was transient
• despite these defects, dams were able to support lactate and support litters
