homeostasis/metabolism
• increased levels of the active form of TGF-beta are found in wound areas
• non-stimulated macrophages produce significantly more of the active form of TGF-beta than controls
• there are increased numbers of neutrophils and monocytes associated with skin wounds within the first 24 hours of injury
• healing of full thickness dorsal incisions is significantly delayed in these mice
• wounds are still open 14 days after injury compared to wild-type mice that close their wounds within three days
• wound size is 9-fold greater 14 days after injury compared to controls
• collagen matrix deposition associated with full thickness dorsal incisions is impaired
• reduced matrix deposition may be associated with the increased elastase activity that occurs in mutant wounds
