Mutation
description
Allele Type:    Spontaneous
Mutation:    Undefined

Mutation detailsA screen of sera from mice of 73 strains for deficiencies in complement-mediated lysis of antibody-primed rabbit or sheep erythrocytes identified two strains, of 8 derived from the wild hybrid species M. m. molossinus, lacking lytic activity. Their hemolytic activity was restored by addition of partially purified human complement factor 8 or of human serum depleted of C8alpha and C8gamma. The gene responsible in strain MSM/Ms was mapped to the region of the mouse genome sharing synteny with the chromosomal location of human C8B. Combined sera from the two deficient strains also lacked hemolytic activity. (J:11000)

Notes
Two sublines of Mae were derived, one deficient in C8beta activity and the other having normal hemolytic activity. The authors state that the female founder of the stock was heterozygous for the inactivating mutation. (J:11000)
