Mapping and Phenotype information for this QTL, its variants and associated markers

Linkage analysis was performed using two different recombinant inbred (RI) mouse populations to identify QTL associated with ventral and dorsal hippocampal volume. The BXD (B=C57BL/6J; D=DBA/2J) RI set included 144 animals from 36 strains analyzed at an average age of 106 days. The AXB/BXA (A=A/J; B=C57BL/6J) RI set included 112 animals from 30 strains analyzed at an average age of 95 days. A mapping panel of 781 microsatellite markers was genotyped in the BXD RI set, and 668 microsatellite markers were genotyped in the AXB/BXA RI set.

In the BXD RI set, significant linkage to dorsal hippocampal volume mapped to 60 cM on mouse Chromosome 15 near D15Mit149 (LOD=3.6). The QTL interval is flanked by D15Mit147 (55.3 cM; 93.31 Mb) and D15Mit35 (61.7 cM; 104 Mb). This locus explains 10.6% of the variance in dorsal hippocampal volume and is named Dshv1 (dorsal hippocampal volume 1).

In the AXB/BXA RI set, significant linkage to dorsal hippocampal volume mapped to 45 cM on mouse Chromosome 5 near D5Mit312 (LOD=2.9). The QTL interval is flanked by D5Mit20 (52 cM; 95.19 Mb) and D5Mit201 (42 cM; 73.85 Mb). This locus explains 15.1% of the variance in dorsal hippocampal volume and also shows association with whole hippocampal volume. The QTL is designated Dshv2 (dorsal hippocampal volume 2).

In the BXD RI set, suggestive linkage to ventral hippocampal volume mapped to 33 cM on mouse Chromosome 8 near D8Mit31 (LOD=2.8), 31 cM on mouse Chromosome 13 near D13Mit94 (LOD=2.7), and 18 cM on mouse Chromosome 2 near D2Mit296 (LOD=2.1). Suggestive linkage to dorsal hippocampal volume mapped to 11 cM on mouse Chromosome 13 near D13Mit115 (LOD=2.3) in the BXD RI set. No suggestive loci for ventral or dorsal hippocampal volume were identified in the AXB/BXA RI set.
