Homozygous null mice show small intestine crypt hyperplasia and villous dysplasia due to altered polarity and hyperproliferation of epithelial cells, exhibit spontaneous chronic colitis due to epithelial immune dysfunction, and develop a digestive disorder that causes malnutrition, growth retardation and early death.
