Homozygotes for a null allele are smaller and show reduced numbers of intestinal goblet, Paneth and enteroendocrine cells, small intestine inflammation, and strain dependent postnatal lethality. Homozygotes for a different null allele are infertile due to defects in primordial germ cell maturation.
